世界地球日(World Earth Day，4月22日)
活動(dòng)起源于美國。1970年4月22日，在美國民主黨參議員蓋洛德尼爾森(Gaylord Nelson)和哈佛大學(xué)學(xué)生丹尼斯海斯的倡議和組織下，美國數十萬(wàn)群眾參與了聲勢浩大的“地球日”活動(dòng)，呼吁創(chuàng )造一個(gè)清潔、簡(jiǎn)單、和平的生活環(huán)境。 作為現代環(huán)保運動(dòng)的開(kāi)端，“地球日”活動(dòng)推動(dòng)了多個(gè)國家環(huán)境法規的建立。
1990年4月22日，全球140多個(gè)國家、2億多人同時(shí)在世界各地舉行形式多樣的環(huán)境保護宣傳活動(dòng)，呼吁改善全球整體環(huán)境。這項活動(dòng)得到了聯(lián)合國的肯定。
2009年4月22日，第63屆聯(lián)合國大會(huì )一致通過(guò)決議，決定將今后每年的4月22日定為“世界地球日”。
20世紀90年代，“地球日”的發(fā)起人創(chuàng )立了“地球日網(wǎng)絡(luò )”組織，將全世界環(huán)保主義者聯(lián)合起來(lái)推動(dòng)“地球日”活動(dòng)的開(kāi)展。 地球是人類(lèi)的共同家園，但人類(lèi)的活動(dòng)卻對地球造成了嚴重的破壞。生物賴(lài)以生存的森林、湖泊、濕地等正以驚人的速度消失;煤炭、石油、天然氣等不可再生能源因過(guò)度開(kāi)采而面臨枯竭;能源燃燒排放的大量溫室氣體導致全球氣候變暖，由此引發(fā)的極地冰蓋融化、海平面上升等問(wèn)題威脅到人類(lèi)的生存發(fā)展。 保護地球資源環(huán)境、尋求可持續發(fā)展模式已刻不容緩。
在2009年“世界地球日”來(lái)臨之際，“地球日網(wǎng)絡(luò )(Earthday Network)”發(fā)起“綠色一代(GREEN GENERATION)”計劃，倡導人類(lèi)社會(huì )經(jīng)濟發(fā)展向可持續模式轉變。該計劃呼吁公眾維護三條核心原則：消除人類(lèi)對化石能源的依賴(lài)性，致力于可再生能源的開(kāi)發(fā)利用，創(chuàng )造一個(gè)“無(wú)炭”的未來(lái);承諾個(gè)人消費習慣與可持續發(fā)展要求相符合;建立“綠色經(jīng)濟”，通過(guò)為貧困人群創(chuàng )造“綠色崗位”使其脫貧，并將全球教育體系轉變?yōu)榄h(huán)保型。
從20世紀90年代起，中國在每年的4月22日都舉辦“世界地球日”宣傳活動(dòng)，并根據當年的情況確定活動(dòng)主題。
最初的地球日選擇在春分節氣，這一天在全世界的任何一個(gè)角落晝夜時(shí)長(cháng)均相等，陽(yáng)光可以同時(shí)照耀在南極點(diǎn)和北極點(diǎn)上，這代表了世界的平等，同時(shí)也象征著(zhù)人類(lèi)要拋開(kāi)彼此間的爭議和不同，和諧共存。傳統上在很多國家都有慶祝春分節氣的傳統。早期聯(lián)合國也在每年的春分舉行世界地球日的活動(dòng)。
