2000年，國務(wù)院正式批復中國記協(xié)《關(guān)于確定“記者節”具體日期的請示》，同意將中國記協(xié)的成立日11月8日定為記者節。記者節像護士節、教師節一樣，是我國僅有的三個(gè)行業(yè)性節日之一。按照國務(wù)院的規定，記者節是一個(gè)不放假的工作節日。
新中國成立前就有記者節。從1933年到1949年，每年的9月1日，新聞從業(yè)人員都舉行各種儀式紀念這一節日。
1949年12月23日，中華人民共和國政務(wù)院頒布的《全國年節及紀念日放假辦法》中明確規定了“記者節”，《辦法》對年節和紀念日放假規定這樣表述：“其他各種紀念節日如：二七紀念、五卅紀念、七七抗戰紀念、八一五抗戰勝利紀念、九一八紀念、護士節、教師節、記者節等，均不必放假�！钡驗楫敃r(shí)沒(méi)有確定具體日期，pincai.com因此長(cháng)期以來(lái)中國新聞從業(yè)人員一直未過(guò)記者節。 1999年9月18日頒布的《 全國年節及紀念日放假辦法》，再一次明確列入了記者節。2000年8月，國務(wù)院正式批復中國記協(xié)的請示，同意將11月8日定為記者節。
11月8日也是中國記協(xié)的成立日。1937年11月8日，以范長(cháng)江為首的左翼新聞工作者在上海成立中國青年記者協(xié)會(huì )，這是中國記協(xié)的前身。
